I’m pretty occupied at the moment with work and university but I still have some hours each week to relax which I could spend doing productive type of relaxing. Lately I have been slightly wasteful with the time (watched too many pointless Youtube videos) and I always feel bad about it. I want to be able to look back even months later and be proud of how much I have got done.
I have two issues which make me unmotivated to do hobby projects.
Firstly, I aways feel obligated to do something that fits to my narrow focus well because then I can leverage my existing skills and have advantage in it. I have started to realize that it’s better to build anything than feel obligated to build something specific and procrastinate by doing passive learning or waste the time even better.
The second issue is that I feel obligated to build one project at a time. The reality is that people often (especially me) have interest span of around 1-3 months for new projects. The excitement changes to obligation to continue the project and then it becomes work and it’s easier to start to procrastinate. My hypothetical solution to this is to firstly try to get concrete results in short time to not lose my motivation but then secondly make it easier to switch between projects. Building in public is beneficial for my career but documenting things makes it also easier to then later pick up the project where it left.
Allowing myself to focus any projects and making it easy to switch between projects might improve my use of time and make me more productive. Additionally I believe it’s important to have some habits. In general I don’t feel confident in my ability to keep habits but lately I have started running regularly (practicing to a half marathon) and I have done 35 days of Duolingo (Chinese) in row. This gives me confidence to take more habits that I see beneficial. This way I keep correct direction in my career but can focus what interests me at the time.
